Back when 'Yonkers' was first released I, and many other, had very high expectations of Tyler, The Creator. The hype for 'Goblin' was huge; absolutely massive. People who i'd never heard speak about Odd Future before were suddenly talking about how 'edgy' and how 'dark' this new song 'Yonkers' is. They still didn't speak about Odd Future, but Tyler was on everyone's lips.
Then Tyler and Hodgy Beats performed 'Sandwitches' live on Jimmy Fallon and the hype grew even more. The amount of energy on that stage lit up my laptop screen.
I have to admit, i bought into the hype also. I was very, very excited for 'Goblin'. I loved and still love 'Bastard', along with most things Odd Future has made. But 'Goblin' was a letdown.
The whole album feels more like Tyler is crying into my arms than rapping to me. Whether Tyler is talking about love or his father the album just doesn't have the same edge to it as it that Tyler has shown in previous releases.
Earl Sweatshirt needs to be here. It shows in Tyler's music; when he raps with Earl is just seems like he's having more fun on the microphone, and is less of an emotional wreck. The more fun Tyler has, the more enjoyable the music is to listen to.
The album isn't necessarily a bad album, but certainly does not live up to the hype. 7/10
